October Is Animal Welfare Month
It is the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and probably of those who love animals. During this month, many parishioners take their pets to their churches to have them blessed. The editor noticed a few years ago that only a few of the parishes in the country have this yearly tradition, but now many parishes have own pet blessing.
In fact year 2005 alone, have received several invitations for their own pets blessings in their parishes, but they have to decline because they are understaffed and besides, some of those invitations were sent at last minute.
In this issue, the story of St. Francis of Assisi is told. The story has been retold many times of those who believe in him is amazed by his ability to talk and understand animals. A person who loves animals should be very proud to read a gem of wisdom from St. Francis of Assisi.
While we rejoice that many fellowmen have considered their pets as part of their families, many our “kababayans” still consider themselves superior to their animal friends that they do not find themselves living harmoniously with them. One example is an article He read in the papers that cats are fired upon by the soldiers in one of the military camps in the metropolis. How pathetic is that? Did it ever occur to officers of the camp to donate three poor cats to one of the animal shelters, instead of targeting as if they have no life at all.
Surely one of their people might find place in their home for these cats. An editor asked of the reporters to do a story unfortunately as a press time he has still to interview the camp director to get his side. We cannot run the story with one angle, don’t you agree? Hopefully i can post the continuation of this issue in my next post.
